(2003-09-07) Duck

|last| |next|

Days here go by quite quickly, and I'm very anxious to start my new jobs. Looks like I'll be starting at least one mid-week.

My fellow volunteers are leaving for language training (which I'm not going to because I won't need it, and I'm only staying for six months, so they want to make the most of my time here) tomorrow, so I'll probably move into my compound tomorrow or Tuesday.

It's been quite nice here, and there's a noticable difference in temperature- even if it's only by a degree or so. The air is so humid it often hurts me to take a deep breath and it keeps me up at night. I'm becoming accustomed to feeling clammy because of the sunscreen and bug spray.

I wish I had lots of adventures to write about, but because we're sleeping in a hotel here, it's hard to really get the feel of Gambian life. We've got a generator for when the power cuts off (which is very frequent, and makes me worried about my work life), and clean water and a pool and cleaning ladies.

I'm sure I'm going to miss it when I move into the compound with the locals, but for now, I'm excited to start my life and have a place of my own.

I want a pet duck.
