Relaxing Weekend and the Indian Concert
|last| |next|
A nice, relaxing weekend. It was fucking hot last night. It's strange how climatized I've become already. I'm going on my third week here, and I notice a drastic change in my comfort level between 29 degrees and 27.5 degrees. At 11pm last night, it was 29 degrees. Too hot to fall asleep easily. Half an hour later, after the fan was on full blast and I was nearly nude, I was able to fall asleep. At 2am, I woke up, cold, and looked at the temperature. Only 1.5 degrees colder, but I needed a sheet to cover me and keep me warm. I can't wait until the dry season, when the days are hot and the nights are cold enough to need blankets and/or a sweater. I went to an Indian concert on Saturday that was horrible. It was a nice excuse to get dressed up though, but the singer (who is world famous, so they said), was just awful. She sang hits from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s before the Intermission, and that's when we left- so I didn't get to hear the hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s. The Indian men who attended cracked me up. They were hooting and hollaring and standing up and dancing and it was fucking halarious. My Indian friend was horrified- she didn't want to be associated with that culture. And on Sunday we went into the capital city (where I work) of Banjul, and some volunteers shopped for material so they can get some African dresses made. This Thursday, we're invited to the British High Commission for drinks and dinner, and so we're dressing up. I haven't bought material or had anything made yet- but I am planning on doing that tonight. Although we're told that traditional African dress looks rediculas on us Toubabs, we're going to wear it anyway. More Gambian countryside. And some sheep. I love the sheep here. They hang out beside the roads.

and then one of me for good measure (check out the tanlines on my shoulder):
